In 2026, grunge-style makeup is making a comeback. Forget the deliberate messiness of the nineties. The new &ldquo;grunge&rdquo; is about cool, casually applied shades, soft shadows, and makeup that looks as if it happened by chance, but is actually thought through down to the very last detail.

If grunge used to be a visual protest, today it has become a form of self-expression. The focus is on a light smoky effect, as if melted into the skin, and a cool-toned palette. All lines are soft, all boundaries are blurred. The makeup looks alive and slightly intimate, as if it changes along with facial expressions.

Ash gray, graphite, cool taupe, smoky plum, and steel with a subtle blue undertone become the key shades for smoky eye makeup. Eyeshadows are applied in layers and almost transparently, with maximum attention to blending. It creates the impression that the color is fused into the skin. Even eyeliner, if used, appears diffused, as if softly smudged with fingers. Makeup artists are increasingly moving away from sharp eye contours, shifting the focus toward texture. Cream and satin formulas are replacing powder ones, creating that signature effect of living smoke.

The skin remains semi-transparent, with a barely noticeable cool glow. Bronzer almost disappears, as warm tones are considered unnecessary in this trend. Porcelain skin comes to the forefront, sometimes with intentionally emphasized paleness. Highlighter is used very delicately and exclusively in cool shades &mdash; pearlescent, icy, and silvery.

Lips in the 2026 grunge aesthetic are either almost colorless or kept very muted. Cool nude shades, rosy-ash tones, softened plum, and the effect of kissed lips without a defined contour are especially relevant.
